“I tell you, to live in a big fancy house like that, maybe I’m in the wrong line of work,” Detective Sergeant Nikki Harding quipped as she parked outside the house.

Night had already settled over Newquay and the search for Adam Cartwright had been fruitless. They’d tried tracing his phone and credit cards with no success. A man like Cartwright whose spent his whole career studying true crime cases will know how to disappear with ease.

“So, any sign of something happening, I want you to radio us, have you got that?” Liv instructed, knowing that if DS Harding had the option, she’d gladly take the law into her own hands.

“Believe it or not, cutting back on the lone wolf routine was one of my New Year’s resolutions,” Nikki quipped with a sarcastic smile.

“Well, we’re going to be looking out around the town for anything,” Liv explained, wondering if she was going to need to herd people out of the street or make sure that nobody was walking home alone.

“For what it’s worth, we really appreciate you doing this,” Archie began, knowing that Nikki had a young daughter who was waiting for her mother.

“Oh, don’t worry about it,” Nikki dismissed with a handwave. “You two are actually doing me a favour. It gets me out of the house and away from…” She broke off, unable to finish the sentence.

Liv remembered seeing her dancing with her husband at Clara and Diana’s wedding reception, seeing how frosty it’d all been between the two. She wondered if the two would be heading into a divorce in the New Year.

“You just focus on doing your job, and I’ll do mine, OK?” she insisted, clearly not willing to dwell on it. “And don’t worry, I’m not looking to fall asleep anytime soon. Not when I’m equipped with the greatest weapon a copper could ever hope for…” She held up a Styrofoam coffee cup and took a large swig from it.

Archie was about to protest on the true value of caffeine as a stimulant, but decided against it, instead, he and Liv left Nikki to watch over the hours.

Hours went by and there was no sign of Professor Cartwright.

But if anything, Nikki was grateful for the opportunity for time to herself. She and her husband had had words over her choice of career; he felt that she should pack in the police force and focus on ‘being a proper mother to Francesca.’ But she wondered how much of that was him genuinely wanting her to do right by her family, and how much of it was him not wanting anything in her life, but her husband.

It was like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. Neither was willing to budge. But sooner or later, something had to give.

But she was determined to keep Francesca in her life, whatever it took. Despite what her partner stated, she was not an absentee mother.

She was so lost in her frustration that she almost missed a shadowed figure making their way towards the house.
